Teresa's Mission:  Adaptive / Accessible Pots

At Ponderosa Pottery, we believe that everyone deserves equal access to a one-of-a-kind handmade dinnerware, including mugs, plates, and/or plates.

These pieces can be made to fit people’s needs with differing abilities. If a large or modified handle, two handles, a straw holder, a wide base, etc., are needed, we will try our best to create a piece adapted to meet specific needs.

BACKGROUND: Nicky, owner, grew up with her aunt Teresa who had cerebral palsy. She observed how Teresa needed an accessible and adapted environment to be as independent as possible. This inspired Nicky to become a school psychologist to assist and help children with disabilities to be as successful as possible in their educational journey. Years later, making pottery started off as a hobby but transpired into a home-based business which quickly grew us opening a storefront business which offers lessons.  

One day, as Nicky and her partner were designing a new utensil holder shape, she realized through this design process that not everyone would be able to equally access her pieces, specifically, be able to enjoy drinking/eating from a handmade dinnerware. Most pots are made in a “standard” fashion and are accessible to most people but that’s not all people or equally accessible which initiated the desire to offer dinnerware which are adapted for individuals. In collaborating with Teresa’s caregiver and sister, Patricia (Nicky’s other aunt), this idea has grown to fruition.

GOAL: The eventual goal is to save a certain percentage of funds to donate to a local high school senior with disabilities to support their independent living and/or continued education. 

HOW: With either a detailed description, sketch, or a virtual/phone meeting, Ponderosa Pottery will create dinnerware customized to meet an individual's needs.
